Inaugurated November 30th, 1992 being St. Andrew’s Day.  The pioneer Bishop was the Rt. Revd. Dr. Cyril Chukwuka Anyanwu of the blessed memory.  The Ecclesiastical Area of Mbaise was relinquished to the Diocese of Mbaise by the Most Revd. Dr. B.C. Nwankiti of the blessed memory the then Bishop of Owerri (Mother Diocese) and the first Vicar general of Mbaise Diocese was the Ven. Herbert Chikezie Onyenwe of the blessed memory.

The Rt. Revd. B.J.E. Ogu (JP) succeeded the pioneer Bishop who died in a London hospital in 1999.  The Rt. Revd. Chamberlain Chinedum Ogunedo (JP) succeeded the second Bishop at his retirement in 2009.

Mbaise Diocese has: 15 Archdeaconries, 38 Parishes, 3 Secondary Schools, A Rehabilitation Centre for the blind at Akpodim and A Specialist hospital at Obohia.

The Diocese also has an information media house – the Forerunner Newspapers.
